You know those days where it feels impossible to work out? Not that you're too sore or you have a cold or something, but it just seems like something...you just really, really, really don't want to do.
I hit that wall...about every time I try to work out. About 10% of the time I genuinely want to work out and I'm pumped to get going - the rest of the time is a struggle. This is where it helps to have a work out buddy, but if you're fresh out because the really good ones live too far away - you have rely on yourself.
Because lets face it - making your husband your workout buddy is like asking for a whole sack of landmines. "Are you going to workout tonight?" "Why? What are you trying to say?!" It just can't come from a good place when it's coming from your spouse's lips.
So you must be your own motivator. You can place little positive post its around the house. You can avoid all of your little vices like, "But look, Cupcake Wars is on." Avoid that one like crazy because cupcakes are my everest, I don't know about you. Well cake in general. I don't say no to cake. I just don't.
So I avoid all TLC and Food Network. That's when I turn to Comcast on Demand. Because On Demand has Exercise TV! Hooray!
And you can get a decent workout within the comfort of you own home - you know, in case that "But its so cold out" excuse gets the better of you.
Usually I'll start watching something and that will get my blood pumping because I think, I'll do this and I'll get my heart pumping and my endorphins going and I'll feel great.
And then sometimes even that doesn't work.
I started watching yoga, the reason being was I just wanted a very zen-like workout. Especially on a Monday. So then I pull up some Yoga program for intermediate learners. Hey, I always bite off more than I can chew - always! So I start watching and soon I'm very intimidated. I don't know why but I don't like it when men are more flexible than me. Its not a sexist thing, it just weirds me out on levels I can't explain.
I mean...really?
This John character got much more bendy than this.
And then he got into his poses:
At that point I just laughed to myself. If that's not asking to come crashing down painfully on my neck, I don't know what is. I exited out of that madness and went searching for something else to wake me up.
But it wasn't happening.
So I turned to the one thing that always works...no matter what.
I turned on the iPod (this one was my Christmas present from my husband - I LOVE IT) and turned it up so I couldn't hear anything else aside from my heart beat and I worked it.
I danced my heart out. I shook it, oh did I shake it and shake it good. Now, I did this in the comfort of my home and I had the house all to myself. The only person who saw how freaky with it I got, was myself.
And you know what? Dancing is a great workout - fantastic even. Dance is great for cardio, flexibility, coordination and strengthening. That's fact. Its also fun.
So what if you don't have rhythm - I swear - 30 minutes of shaking it like a runaway felt fantastic. I highly recommend it.
Highly.
